You Are Somebody

Have you ever watched a designer at work? First, they have an idea. They see it in their mind before they create it. In the same way, you were in God’s mind before you were ever in your mother’s womb.

It doesn’t matter whether you were born into a rich family or a poor one. It doesn’t matter what others think or say about you. God loved you, formed you in your mother’s womb, and created you with purpose. He gave you your identity, your personality and your gifts—and God does not make mistakes.  Psalm 139:16 says:

“Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

God preserved your life. Whatever hardships you have faced—neglect, abuse, rejection, disappointment or discouragement—He brought you to the knowledge of Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. He has sustained you and is still working out His purpose in your life despite every attempt of the enemy to destroy or discourage you.

The truth is, if you had not gone through everything you have experienced, you would not be the person you are today. God has been shaping you, refining you, strengthening you and preparing you from the very beginning.

People are often quick to decide who is important and who is not. They may value the chief executive over the secretary or the cleaner, but God does not measure people that way. My grandmother used to say, “All the fingers are not the same length, but every one of them has a purpose.” Every person has value in God’s eyes.

Don’t allow other people to make you feel inferior, insecure or unimportant. If you spend your life trying to gain the approval of others, you may miss the calling God has placed on your life.  And you can become envious of other people. And that is not good.

Breaking away from the expectations of others is not always easy. Jesus experienced it Himself. When people asked, “Is this not the carpenter’s son?” (Matthew 13:55), they were trying to keep Him in the place they thought He belonged. If they did it to Jesus, they may do it to you.

But remember, Romans 14:12 reminds us that “each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.” In the end, you answer to God—not to the opinions of people. Never allow someone else’s expectations to keep you from obeying God’s call on your life.

Before you were born, God knew exactly why He created you. He placed within you the gifts you would need and allowed you to grow in the circumstances that would prepare you for your purpose. And when God looked at His creation, He said, “It was very good.” (Genesis 1:31)

You need to believe that about yourself as well—not out of pride, but because you agree with what God says about you.

When you understand your value in Christ, it changes the way you live. It affects the way you speak, the way you pray, the way you serve, the way you work and the confidence with which you face life. Healthy self-esteem is not based on pride; it is based on God’s opinion of you. As 1 John 3:21 reminds us, “When our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God.”

So, line up your opinion with God’s opinion. Appreciate who He created you to be. Develop the gifts He has given you. Stop wishing you were somebody else. If two of us were exactly alike, one of us would be unnecessary.

God made you unique. You are somebody because God created you, Christ redeemed you, and He has a purpose for your life.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for creating each one of us with love, purpose and intention. Help us to see ourselves as You see us—not through the opinions of others, but through Your truth. Heal every wound caused by rejection, insecurity or fear, and remind us that our identity is found in Christ alone. Give us the courage to walk confidently in the calling You have placed upon our lives and to use the gifts You have given us for Your glory. May we never compare ourselves with others but rejoice in the unique purpose You have for each of us. We thank You that we are Your workmanship, created for good works. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
