When Life Overwhelms You – (2 Samuel 15:11–14)

There are seasons in every person’s life when trouble seems overwhelming. Challenges can threaten our homes, marriages, children, health, jobs, finances, ministries, and even our faith. Some difficulties come because of our own mistakes, while others are the result of spiritual attacks, injustice, jealousy, or circumstances beyond our control.

Today we will look at how King David responded when one of the greatest crises of his life threatened to destroy him. (In 2 Samuel 15:11-14)

“And with Absalom went two hundred men invited from Jerusalem, and they went along innocently and did not know anything.  Then Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counsellor, from his city—from Giloh—while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy grew strong, for the people with Absalom continually increased in number. Now a messenger came to David, saying, “The hearts of the men of Israel are with Absalom.”  So, David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Arise, and let us flee, or we shall not escape from Absalom. Make haste to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly and bring disaster upon us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword.”

King David’s own son, Absalom, led a conspiracy to overthrow him and seize  throne. Many of Israel’s leaders sided with Absalom, including Ahithophel, David’s trusted counsellor, whose advice was regarded as if it came from God Himself. The rebellion became so strong that David and those loyal to him had no choice but to flee Jerusalem.

Imagine David’s pain. Betrayed by his own son and abandoned by trusted friends, he found himself running for his life. David was a mighty warrior who had defeated giants and won many battles, yet this was a battle he could not fight in his own strength.

Perhaps you can relate. What do you do when your marriage is falling apart? When your health is failing? When your children reject your guidance? When trusted friends disappoint you? When you have done everything, you know to do, yet the situation only grows worse?

David’s response teaches us some valuable lessons.

  1. Turn to God First

When trouble comes and every human solution has failed, our first response should be to seek the Lord.  David said in 2 Samuel 15:25:

“Then the king said to Zadok, “Carry the ark of God back into the city. If I find favour in the eyes of the Lord, He will bring me back and show me both it and His dwelling place.”

The Ark of the Covenant represented God’s presence, and David refused to trust in symbols alone. Instead, he placed his confidence in God Himself.

    When trials come, ask:
    • Lord, where are You in this situation?
    • What are You teaching me?
    • What would You have me do?

God always has a purpose, even in our pain (1 Corinthians 10:13).

“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”

  1. Return to the Place of Prayer

David returned to the wilderness—the very place where God had first prepared him for leadership. It was there that he had learned to trust the Lord and where many of the Psalms were born.

Instead of giving in to fear, David prayed specifically:

“O Lord, I pray, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.” (2 Samuel 15:31)

There is a lesson here for us. Bring your needs to God with honesty and specificity. He invites us to cast all our cares upon Him because He cares for us.

  1. Praise God While You Wait

Prayer should always lead us into worship. Praise is an expression of faith. It reminds us that God is still on the throne, even when our circumstances suggest otherwise.

God answered David’s prayer. Ahithophel’s counsel was frustrated, Absalom’s rebellion came to an end, and David was restored to his throne.  Psalm 34:19 reminds us:

“Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.”

Trouble is inevitable, but defeat is not. When we seek God, trust His timing, and continue to worship Him, He is faithful to sustain us and bring us through every trial.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that You are our refuge and strength in times of trouble. When we feel overwhelmed, help us to turn to You first instead of relying on our own understanding. Teach us to pray with faith, to wait patiently for Your perfect timing, and to praise You even before we see the answer. Strengthen every heart that is carrying a heavy burden today and remind us that You will never leave us nor forsake us. We place every concern into Your loving hands, trusting that You are working for our good and for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen
