“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”
Ephesians 2:8 reminds us of one of the most beautiful truths of the Christian faith: we are saved by grace through faith.
Grace is God’s unmerited favour toward us. We did not earn it, we cannot buy it, and we certainly do not deserve it. It is a gift from a loving and merciful God.
Today, I want us to consider three things:
- Understanding the gift of grace
- Guarding against ungratefulness
- Growing in grace through acceptance
1. Understanding the Gift of Grace
Grace is a treasure of immeasurable worth. It is not something we have earned; it is something God gives freely.
Imagine a father forgiving a wayward child—not because the child deserves forgiveness, but because the father’s love is greater than the child’s mistakes. That gives us a small picture of God’s grace. Romans 3:23 tells us:
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
We all need grace. We have all fallen short, made mistakes, and gone our own way. Yet God does not wait for us to become perfect before He reaches out to us. He meets us where we are and offers us His grace.
But we must do more than recognise our need for grace—we must receive it.
Receiving grace means letting go of pride, self-righteousness and the belief that we can save ourselves. It means acknowledging our need for God and placing our faith in Jesus Christ.
Grace is not only for the moment we are saved. We need God’s grace every day—in our weaknesses, our failures, our struggles and our weariness. Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 12:9:
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
What a wonderful promise. God’s grace is sufficient.
Having received grace, we are called to reflect grace. We should forgive others because we have been forgiven, show mercy because we have received mercy, and love because God first loved us. So let us recognise our need for grace, receive it, rely upon it, and reflect it.
2. Guarding Against Ungratefulness
Grace is a gift, but we must never become so familiar with it that we stop appreciating it.
One way we guard against this is by cultivating a heart of gratitude. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says:
“In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
We don’t give thanks because every circumstance is good. We give thanks because God is good and He is with us in every circumstance. We should also remember the cost of grace.
Romans 5:8 says:
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Grace is free to us, but it was not cheap. Our salvation cost Jesus His life. When we remember what Christ has done for us, gratitude should naturally follow. And gratitude must be more than words. James 2:17 tells us that faith without action is dead.
Therefore, our gratitude should be visible in how we live—in how we treat people, how we serve, how we forgive, and how we love. Jesus said in Matthew 10:8:
“Freely you have received; freely give.”
We have received grace freely, so we should extend grace freely.
Finally, we must remain humble. James 4:6 reminds us:
“God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Humility reminds us that we are not the authors of our salvation. Grace is God’s gift, not our achievement.
So let us guard against ungratefulness by remaining thankful, remembering the cost of grace, living out our gratitude, extending grace to others, and walking humbly before God.
3. Growing in Grace Through Acceptance
Grace is not simply something we receive; it is something that should transform our lives.
(Romans 5:1–2)
“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.”
Through faith, we have access to God’s grace, and we now stand in grace. But grace should never leave us unchanged.
As we accept God’s grace, He begins to shape our hearts, change our desires and mould us more into the likeness of Christ. This is why Colossians 3:12 says:
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”
These qualities should increasingly become evident in our lives.
If we truly understand grace, it should change the way we see ourselves, the way we see God, and the way we treat others. Grace received should become grace reflected.
Conclusion
Church, let us never take God’s grace for granted.
We did not earn it. We could never deserve it. God gave it because He loves us.
Grace found us when we were lost. Grace lifted us when we fell. Grace strengthens us when we are weak. And grace continues to carry us every day.
Let us:
Understand the gift of grace.
Guard our hearts against ungratefulness.
And grow in grace as we allow God to transform our lives.
And above all, let us extend to others the same grace that God has so freely given to us.
Because we are saved by grace, we live by grace, and we should reflect grace.
May we never take God’s grace for granted.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your amazing grace—the grace we could never earn and never deserve.
Thank You for sending Jesus Christ to die for our sins and for giving us salvation through faith.
Help us never to take Your grace for granted. Give us grateful hearts, humble spirits, and lives that reflect Your love and mercy.
When we are weak, remind us that Your grace is sufficient. When we fall, help us to turn back to You. And as we have received grace, teach us to extend grace to others.
Transform us daily into the likeness of Christ, and let our words, actions and lives be a testimony of Your goodness. Thank You for Your unfailing love and for the gift of grace.
